This can be a good thing for those who will use the credit card responsibly. A college student credit card can be a great start to building a good credit history. However, many students misuse their credit cards. Rather than using them for emergencies only, or using them frequently and paying off the balances each month, many students use their credit cards to make frivolous purchases. They buy clothing and accessories, go out to eat, and purchase video games. These are items that they could do without. They simply spend because they have a credit card that allows them to do so. They are unable to pay the entire balance off at the end of the month. They carry a high balance. Sometimes, they cannot afford to pay the minimum monthly payment. They get behind in their credit card bill, and they are slapped with late fees and over limit fees. Rather than build a good credit history, these students ruin their credit as quickly as they obtained it. Often, a college student can get a college student credit card right on campus. Some credit card companies prey upon college students, knowing that many of them are likely to default on their credit card payments. They may set up tables in student unions and in or outside of other buildings on campus. This is enticing to students, but it can be very dangerous.
